My friend and loomy extraordinaire, Maria from Mexico, has come up with a brilliantly soft and fluffy scarf project, which has the added benefit of possibly being the fastest scarf in recent history to knit! I decided to give this wonder a try, and just added a few of my own little touches.
I first started with Sensations Sumptuous yarn from Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft, which is the fattest yarn I’ve ever put on my looms, lol. I tried knitting regularly with this yarn and just couldn’t do it… even on the large gauge of the Knifty Knitters! But the way this scarf is loomed, it made the perfect yarn for a very scrumptious fluff to cuddle around your neck.
The next thing I did differently was to first start with just the center 4 stitches, slipping the turning pegs each row. I did that for a few rows, then I added the next stitch on each side over the next 2 rows, still slipping pegs. I added these with only skipping one peg at first, and then I just moved these loops over a peg for the next few rows to gradually increase the space to the original 3 pegs. After that, I added the final stitches on each side over the next 2 rows…still slipping turning pegs. The final increase was to knit all pegs with no slipping. Then I just knit until I had a handful of yarn left, enough to recreate the tapered effect I had done on the beginning of the scarf, but in decreases instead of increases.
A couple very fat pompoms added to each end finished the scarf! This was quick as well, as I used the Doodle Loom… this is one slick trick… I like it a lot! The only thing is that you really have to pay close attention to the set up of your pompom from the instructions included with the loom, otherwise you might cut the wrong thing and end up with lots of little tails of yarn and no pompom! :-0
I will add a little side note about actually wearing the scarf. This is one of my new favorites to wear…hands down! But, I need to say that it does tend to stretch as it’s worn, and the stitch definition kind of melds together as well. I’m not sure if this is because of the type of yarn I used, or just because of the nature of the scarf, but I wanted to let you know about this. To me, it’s not a big deal, because the scarf is scrummy no matter what, lol. I did have to launder mine (already, lol…I can’t seem to refrain from spilling things these days) and I just blocked it as I had originally knit it and it held it shape again for a while.
All in all, this makes a terrific scarf! I’ve made two so far and am intending on finishing a third before Christmas arrives. 🙂 Many thanks go to Maria for coming up with another ingenious way to use our looms!
