Halloween in August?!

Well, my week has been so exciting!

As noted in the blog before…we have had a little trouble with spiders.   Poisonous ones, to be specific.  Yep, Hobo spiders.

Well, on Monday, when my daughters and I were going through their clothes to weed out, pass down, get rid of, etc…we were taking a bag of clothes for my younger daughter to still grow into, out to our storage shed, there were at least a dozen of their funnel shaped webs laced underneath the wooden pallet crates (yeah, not a good idea) we use as a floor to keep everything up off the ground.  Looking down we saw a very large specimen right at the door, practically waving at us and inviting us for tea!  I grabbed a stick and speared it…then armed with my weapon looked around for more.  I was rewarded with another, and I speared it too!  Call me the mighty spider hunter!

Wednesday night, while watching a new episode of Strong Bad (he’s great for a laugh if you have a particularly weird sense of humor :)  ) on the computer, I see a big one quickly making it’s creepy way under the computer desk!  I luckily was holding a pair of my shoes (a minor miracle!)  and found it lurking behind some cords and whacked it…it tried to run away and I promptly, wearing both shoes on my hands smooshed it as hard as I could, with great success & satisfaction!

Halloween in August?!

Needless to say, we went out and bought some traps.  We have a box set into the ground made for holding fire wood, which right now only has one neatly wound hose, right outside our back door off the patio.  I had my husband, wearing thick gloves and armed with a hammer, open the lid so I could toss in a trap.  On the bottomside of the lid, we immediately saw 6 large hobos and some assorted babies hovering in their webs.  My husband promptly pounded them one by one with his hammer.  Then, as if this wasn’t enough, we noticed that they had company…2 black widows were slinking around, hoping we wouldn’t spot them!  My husband quickly dispatched them as well, while I…brave little me, (yeah, right ;)  ) stood shuddering and scratching.  We didn’t buy those traps any too early, let me tell you!

In knitting news, I’m working on something orange & wooly, which I’ll share with you soon.  But with all the creepy spiders and all the orange yarn, I feel like it’s already October 31st and I’m perpetually being boo’d!

My fifteen year old daughter said that if I could be a superhero, I should be Spider Woman…I promptly said, “No Way!  I’d have to get bit!” To which she replied that I wouldn’t have to go that far…all I’d have to do is dunk myself in a vat of radioactive materials and I’d be set!  :D

What went wrong with the Monkeys…

Okay…yesterday I was going to post a really long blog entitled Monkeys in the Bathtub.  If you look on the sidebar, it still says that I did post an entry entitled that (or it did when I wrote this).  It was rather long, just the way I wanted it to sound, and the important thing was that it was done.  Well, I clicked on the Publish button and wah-lah…nothing.  Everything was gone.  I have no idea where it went.  I tried pushing the back arrow…tried searching my window history, and I did find it that way, but when I tried to publish that one, it asked me to log on again, and when I did…everything was gone again! Needless to say, I was ticked off slightly frustrated ;)  and had to get off the computer for the rest of the day.

So to forget my angst, we went on a family outing to our local event…the Garlic Fest & Craft Fair.  What a fun Fun @ the Garlic Festtime!  Just the smell on the breeze was fabulous.  You don’t have to be a lover of garlic to enjoy this event, though.  It’s held at a historic farm and barn right outside of town, and the event is sprawled around the hillside and inside the barn.  There’s rows of hay bales set up to listen to a live band playing rock/blues, and a whole row filled with venders selling absolutely delicious food…it was so old time harvesty, mixed with a contemporary flair…we all had such a great time just being there!

On a loomy note…I’m working on something exciting that I hope you’ll enjoy!  Next week I will be posting a new page on the site where you can go to find loomy patterns that will inspire & challenge  you.  I’ve been busy knitting up projects and typing up plans that will keep you going for sometime.  I can’t wait to share them with you!  Here’s a little preview…

Plus, I think it helps to still be just a big kid myself!  :D

Mystery Project Preview…

Before Felting…

This little diddy is my newest, almost done project!  I’m aiming for it to be one item…but depending on how it comes out after felting, it may miraculously become something else!  ;)

I love the color changes…it so reminds me of Fall & harvest time.  I think Fall is my absolute favorite time of year.  I love the crisp smell in the air and seeing all the gorgeously rich colors that nature has bestowed on us…it’s so magical!

Well…I’ll keep you posted on how it turns out.  Before I felt it, I have to stop by my local craft store to pick up some “sparkle” for the trim…another thing I absolutely love!

Reminiscing with a Fever…

Why is it that when we have the most to do…that’s when something goes wrong…like getting sick!

Yesterday, we had a sudden weather change from very hot and sunny, to rainy and windy, and then back again.  This tends to wreak havok with my immune system and tells it to “Bail!!!”

So, here I am writing this little note with a burning throat and piercing headache.  I have gotten a little more done on my looming that I lugged around at the fair, though, and have also been working on another goody for you…a new pattern!  Well, I’m re-working an earlier pattern of mine.

It’s amazing how when we first begin something new, we think that what we’ve produced is of such impeccable quality, until we revisit the same, sometime down the road and discover how mediocre it really was!  (I’m speaking of my pattern writing abilities)  Well, none of my students seemed to notice, or they were just too sweet and respecting of my feelings to mention it.  Thank you to all of my previous students for overlooking my original inadequacies :) …what would I do without you!

Well, I think it’s early bedtime for me tonight…I hope all is well with you and yours & that you are experiencing the best of health!  Good Night…

Tuesday @ The Fair!

Pirate & Parrots

*The pictures say it all!*

Glider Ride  We went to the SW Washington Fair today.  The skies were shiny, the rides were spinny, and the corn dogs spendy…everything you’d ever want in a county fair.  We all had a good time.  My 15 yr old daughter & I vote for the pirate and his parrots as the best entertainment, but my 11 yr old and her friend would definitely agree that the rides were the highlight of their day.  When we had to go, they still wanted more!“Stilts Man”

I have to say…I lugged my loom and yarn around the fairgrounds all day in hopes to get some knitting done.  I did get a little done…7 rows!  :)   Well, you can’t say I didn’t try!  I’m sure I’ll get more done as the week progresses.

I hope you’re enjoying satisfying, sunny summer days before they all blow away…School time’s just around the corner!  Yikes!

Weekend full of Sand & Swirls

Our WeekendThis weekend my family and I took a little trip to the Washington Coast.  On the 2 hour drive I got a little looming done…I was teaching the Felted Bottle Hug at a recent class and got part way through with one, and so I determined to finish it on the drive there.  We stopped in Aberdeen at a fabulous old lumber baron’s estate, that has since been turned into a musem.  We all love knocking around in old houses and museums.  It’s amazing the insights  you get about the past and the people of those times, just by visiting the objects they used, and looking at places they lived.  It gives you a connection to your roots.

The weather at the beach was fair.  It wasn’t very windy, which in Washington is a huge plus for a beach trip!  But the sun kept going behind clouds and making us want to hunker down in our sweatshirts and munch our salt water taffy purchased in Westport.  All in all, it was a great family day!

On Sunday, I decided that since I was doing Swirly Hug 2mountains of laundry Swirly Bottle Huganyway (yuck!), I should go ahead and felt my Bottle Hug.  This time around I used Patons SWS, with some contrasting Lion Brand Felting Wool at the bottom.  When it was felted, the varigated color of the SWS yarn lost it’s pretty luster that it had originally, (it was really pretty boring!) so I decided to use the contrasting yarn and a strong tapestry needle to chain stitch some swirlies into the hug.  A row of alternating lengths of blanket stitches completed the design and Wah-Lah!  Just what it needed!  Lesson learned: Never be afraid of changing something up & making it yours! :)

FREE LOOM KNITTING PATTERN!

Felted Bottle HugHere’s another something fun for you to try during the hot August months.  I’ve used my Felted Bottle Hug out in the direct sunlight for hours and it still stays cold!  Felted wool is a great insulator.  This project also has a fun technique to creating a flat bottom by weaving…perfect for applying to other projects!

This pattern is listed on the Freebies page…Enjoy!
