August Plans~

I’ve started out the month with a BANG!  :)

I’ve just today completed project number 13 for the BOOK!!!!  I’m really thrilled with how they’re all coming out…I hope that you will be too when I finally get to share them with you.   It’s been like expecting a baby and keeping all the milestones and progress a secret, lol.

My goals for the end of the month of August

  • Complete 7 more new projects for the book.
  • Type all the patterns into the computer…I should be doing this as I go, I suppose, but I tend to take my knitting everywhere with me, and my little design notebooks go along for the ride, too.  Inside their pages are stashed all my notes for new projects as I knit, as well as  little drawings that will be included as pics/sketches to help with the understanding of the process of re-creating them.  I have been really hesitant about changing the way I record the patterns, because the notebooks have become like little creative diaries for me over the last almost 6 years.  I can look over past notes, doodles and designs and remember everything that was happening in my life at the time. They’ve in a way, become good friends…it’s never easy to turn your back on a friend, right?  :)  …so back to my goal: begin typing all the patterns into the computer, lol.

I think that’s quite enough for 30 days, don’t you?  September will have it’s own goals that will require re-knitting these projects into other sizes/colors, photography, step-outs, editing…etc.

All in all, I think things are moving along quite nicely! :D

Bethany~

ps:  Just out of curiosity, I went back and counted all of my original patterns and projects that have been scribbled down into the pages of my little design diaries and counted a total of…72!!!  No kidding…I really had no idea there were so many, lol!

Walkin’ the Pooch Parka~

I’ve recently had the opportunity to re-create the Pooch Parka, a submission of mine for the Loom Knitting Pattern Book.

As I was knitting this project for the 2nd (& 3rd!) time, I realized that there are some things that I wanted to actually do different to make things a bit smoother as I worked through the project.  I decided that it would probably be a good idea to share those tips with you, in case you had a canine buddy that you were planning on creating this really quite adorable little sweater for.  **Keep in mind that you’ll actually need to refer to the original pattern in the book to be able to follow along~

So here we go:

In creating my 2nd “Santa Parka”, I actually used only one strand throughout, which made the project a little less dense.  This is a good way to go if you don’t need such a thick parka. Also, the white furry trim was a tad bit thinner  (#5 bulky) than the original choice of yarn (#6 super bulky), so the number of rows differed just a bit for the body of the project.

The next thing I changed up was in the shaping of the front chest area, when the project begins to be knit in a flat panel.

Row 22:

  • You’ll actually be going backward one peg (from 5 of the previous row to 4 of this row) when you “twist” yarns, which is fine, just keep it kind of loose so the project doesn’t pucker here.
  • When you’re ready to move to the MC, you’ll actually need to CO a new strand, because your original strand is “stranded“, lol, at the other side of the loom. ;)   (*note: you can actually cut the original MC strand, as you’ll now be using the newly CO strand throughout the project.)
  • At peg #23, CO a new strand of CC yarn…Do Not Cut Original Strand! You will now have 2 strands of CC yarns for working the trim on each side of the panel.

Row 23: In order to make this work with the 2 strands of CC, after your decreases, you’ll need to go backwards with your first strand again, twisting loosely around MC so as to not pucker, from peg 8 of the previous row to peg 5 of this row.  You’ll need to do the same at the end of the row for the 2nd strand of CC, from peg 3 to 23 (crossing backwards over pegs 2,1 & 24).

After this maneuvering, you should be able to now use your -CC strand at each end and MC strand- interchangeably as you panel knit back and forth for each row of the pattern….whew!  It’s a mouth full, but as you are working the project, you’ll clearly understand what I mean (I hope, lol).  ;)

With the change of yarn types, I actually only knit in the pattern until Row 50, then increased the # of  the thinner CC yarn to a total of 10 rows for the base.

Again, for the difference in yarns, I changed the strap rows to 48.

Row 54: Peg #3 will only have 2 loops (not 1) and will therefore not be KO.

Row 55: Peg #3 will be KO 2 loops over 1 (not 1 over 1).

Weave in all ends…with the extra yarn maneuvers listed here you’ll have a few more ends to weave in, but the results are definitely better when all is said and done.

Okay…that should do it!  I hope this helps you when creating this project, and gives you the freedom to create your Pooch Parka in other styles and colors of yarns for an unlimited variety of finished looks.  :)   As always, I’d love to see your pictures, and would be honored to post them in the Clique Pics Page!  ***Also, please feel free to post any questions you might have about this pattern right here in the comments section of this post, and I’ll answer here as well, so that we can keep all the learning process in one place for everyone’s benefit.

Happy Looming!

Is it July already?!

Oh…My…Goodness!  :P   That’s pretty much all I can say.  I’m flabbergasted, lol!

So much has been going on to keep us all very busy over here in my little corner of the world.  June has seen my daughter graduate both from high school and from her first 2 years of college, with a big celebration at the end. It has seen my youngest daughter complete her first year of at-home-online school (whew!).  It has seen my aunt and uncle through their 50th year of marriage, and my hubby and I through our 20th.  :)

June has also seen us through a whole lot of loom knitting!  First, I found myself working on some adorable little booties for my nephew and his wife’s shower for their first baby girl, who is expected to arrive in July (oops!  That’s this month… I’d better get working on that matching hat!)

It also found us…I say us because my daughters actually got in on the fun for this one!… working on a total of eight projects in just seven days!  Can you believe it?  All the projects I have on my plate right now (at last count it was nine UFO’s!) and we’re able to team up and actually complete eight entire projects in just a week’s time (well, it was actually 2 each of 4 projects total).  Albeit, we did throw some very late nights in there to be able to meet the deadline, but all was accomplished and nothing was late. :)   We were working on some items for Provo Craft to be able to take on tour with them to show all the cool things you can create using the Knifty Knitter looms.  All in all, we made 2 table runners, 2 doggie sweaters, 2 pillows, and 2 cuddly sweet things.  I’m planning on sharing with you all about how I made the doggie sweaters, as it’s the Pooch Parka , and I think I can share some additional tid bits that may help you if you’re planning on creating it sometime in the near future.  As for the other items…I think I need to keep those quiet for now, as I think they’re going to end up in the bigger project that I’m working on.   So, sssssshhhhh! ;)   (btw: those booties and hat above will most likely make their way into the project as well, so stay tuned!)

But for now…I’d like to share with you our pride in my eldest daughter’s accomplishments.  I have put this little video collage together to celebrate Emily and the amazing girlie that she is.  I hope you enjoy and can feel the piece of happiness and pride in my heart that is stamped with her name. :)

New Flash!!!

Hey, all!  I know I’ve been away for a while…lots of things going on around here, including a broken computer!  Aaaaaaaaa!  This is definitely NOT what I need right now, lol. :P

BUT…I wanted to stop in real quick and give you a heads up on 2 very special pieces of news out there in the loomy world.

  1. My good friend and Loomy Extraordinaire, Isela Phelps,  is super close to winning a fantabulous bike for her mama!  She’s done so much for all of us in the loom knitting world that she really deserves our help… pop on over to this link: http://cycleandstyle.com/2010/04/vote-for-the-bicycle-contest-finalists/ and vote for Isela!  You can vote every 24 hours through May 1st…let’s see what kind of action we loomies can do! :)
  2. There’s a new loom knitting book hot off the press and available right here: I Can’t Believe I’m Loom Knitting by Kathy Norris!  Woot woot!!!  Just looking at the cover, this one appears to have some great content on projects with intriguing patterns and designs that I’d love to whip up myself….way to go, Kathy!!! We’re so proud of  you! :D

Well…that’s it for now.  I told you it would be quick, lol!  I’m planning on writing up a more detailed post of where I’ve been for the last week and half, and will try to catch you up sometime soon.  But until then…have a super fantastic rest of the week, make sure to VOTE for Isela and check out that new book!

A New Clique Pic!

I thought you’d like to take a peek at my friend Becky’s Braided Cables Bag

Didn’t she do a fantabulous job on it??? :D   This picture was snapped just before she gifted it to a very lucky lady relative.  Becky is one of the gals in my local looming group.  Well…it was local until we moved 50 miles north, lol!  But we still enjoy getting together once a month for some looming fun and sharing.  Most of us met a few years back when I was still teaching classes at both the college and at Michaels.  We all just couldn’t knock the fun of this craft and so keep plugging away and enjoy each others company every once in a while. :)

I’m really excited to say that I have a new convert to the wonders of fine gauge looms from this group too!  She’s taken the plunge and ordered a Small Gauge 20″ AJAL from Decor Accents! I can’t wait till she gets it and tell me how she likes using it over the larger gauge looms that she’s used thus far.  It’s definitely a new experience and one that I think every serious loom knitter should know first hand.  There’s a purpose and a place for everything, and looms are no exception.  The possibilities with loom knitting are pretty much endless, although they are  a bit limited to what kind of loom you have on hand.  Until you branch out a bit in your loom collection some projects and techniques might simply be out of reach.  (in my humble opinion, lol!)

So my advice is to be brave!  Branch out!  Try something new…I think you’ll love the thrill you get from doing so! :D

January Loom Alongs!

Hey there everybody! :)

How about a little Loom Along for the rest of the month of January???

I thought it might be fun to work up a project step by step throughout the next couple of weeks… what do you say?

This is what I thought we might like to make:

a Winter Whimsy!

It’s up to you and your whimsy how you wear it… as a Cozy Cowl,  a Snuggler for your hands,  or a Pocket Purse!

Winter Whimsy~

Gather your materials and we’ll start the Loom Along this Friday,

January, 15th…

just keep your eye out for the publication of the first part of the pattern.  ;)

Materials to Gather:

  • Knifty Knitter long pink loom (or any other regular/ large gauge double knit loom with at least 12 sets of pegs)
  • Approx. 140 yrds of #5 bulky yarn, or 280 yrds #4 ww yarn double stranded
  • Small amount of contrasting color waste yarn
  • Loom Tool, 5.5-6 mm Crochet Hook, Yarn Needle, Scissors, & 2 Decorative Buttons.

Okay…that’s about it for that!  I’ll see ya’ on Friday for the LAL!

Oh! I almost forgot.  If you’re interested in looming up some sweet little Frosty Friends, there’s a LAL going on in the Ravelry Loom Along group this month that’s all about snow people…how fun is that?!  Just head on over to join in on the fun.  :)

Happy Looming!

Musings of the New Year & the Old~

I’ve been wracking my noggin’ over the last week about what I want to see happen in 2010.  I keep thinking it should be something fantastic, as it’s the first new decade into the new century of the new millennium!

But….then I think to myself, it’s just another day, passing into another year, as it inevitably does every year.  Why should this year be any more special or grandiose?  I think I’m not quite finished perusing the possibilities for the  new year ahead.  I guess I’m on retail time, lol.  I’ve worked in retail so long, that I think the idea of the old year not being completely finished until inventory has taken place, usually by the end of January, has rooted itself in my mind and emotions so completely that I can’t quite finish out the old year until the excitement from the holidays completely subside, and inventory of the previous year has been accomplished.

So, if you don’t mind, I’m going to mull over and reminisce a bit before thoroughly deciding what the new year should be about…is that okay?

First of all, I’d like to share a bit of loomy goodness that was passed out during the holiday celebrations as gifties to my friends and loved ones…

You’ve already seen the Double Knit Colorblock Scarf I presented my hubby in the previous post..

This was given to my Great-Nephew Blake.  It was created with him in mind and he’d had the fun of meeting it long before the holidays for photo ops.  It was neat to see him finally get to open his gift and find his Silly Snake nestled inside. :)

The new baby in the family, my Great-Nephew Tristan, was given the dapper clad Bailey Bear.  He’s a tad too young to really appreciate this little guy yet, but soon he’ll be learning how to dress and undress this furry little friend, I’m sure!  Actually, he could probably wear the little booties right now, lol!

My 10 year old  niece, Trinity, was given the Felted Rosette Handbag to keep as her very own… with a lovely gold and amethyst swarovsky crystal necklace tucked inside.

My family holds a large gift exchange at our big Christmas gathering… we each bring a present that is either for a girl or a guy, depending on what you are, lol!  This year, we needed to bring 3 girlie gifts for myself and my 2 daughters: 2 of them just happened to be some loomy goodies!

Warm Woolies

The first was a Cabled Mug Hug and mug, with some coffee, cocoas, and teas, of which my sister-in-law, Michelle, wound up receiving.  The second was one of my newest creations: Warm Woolies!  These were given to my neice, Justine, who apparently loves to wear mittens, and hers were starting to wear out…so perfect timing!

My 4 siblings and my parents received some kitchen goodies along with some Scrubby-O’s!  My mom and dad had a couple new double knit dishcloths added into their package, which I can’t believe that I completely forgot to photograph, as it is a new design of three that I’m working on for sharing with you all!  Silly me…I’ll have to make up another one, or see if I can bring my camera next time I go visit and take a few shots, lol.

My girlies were not left out and received some fibery goodness of their own, but unfortunately I can’t quite share it with you as yet, as I’m thinking of making that a surprise for later… ;)

I also have two more goodies to show you that involves gifties for the holidays, but I’d like to spend a little more time dedicated to each one.  One is a brand new design, that I’m thinking would be an excellent Loom Along for right here on the bloggie (!!!) and the other is a new twist on an older, yet no less adorable, little loomy project!

So…while I’m ruminating about how to go about spending this new year that’s beginning to unfold right before our eyes, we’ll still be going about having a bit of fun along the way.  :)   I hope you’re all having a wonderful beginning to this fresh new season, filled with joy and comfort and many blessings over flowing!

The Infomercial is LIVE! :D

Just click on the below link to check out the special website which contains the infomercial video, as well as the testimonials that were given by Isela, Shannon Erling, myself and a few others… It’s fun, fun, fun!   :D

PS: For those of you who were wondering, I did find out that the project DVD that is being included in this package of looms will not be available at any other location.  The DVD was created exclusively for this particular Knifty Knitter kit special… so if you reeeeeaaaaallly want a copy, just purchase the kit and you’ll get the looms along with the DVD for free, lol!  A person can always use more looms, right?  They make wonderful gifts!

Please feel free to drop a comment here to let me know what you think about the videos… I’m nervous excited to hear what you think!  ;)

Happy Looming!
