Over the past year, as part of our Consumer Insight strategy, we have asked customers what they like most about our stores, how we can improve, and what we are missing. When asked about classes they had lots to say. Currently the customers’ experience varies so greatly from store to store that we are taking their feedback to heart and implementing a class & event program that can deliver an outstanding experience in all stores, which is a good challenge for a chain of our size (nearly 1,000 stores!). Michaels is transitioning from a heavily class-driven program into a program offering more FREE demos, events, and Make-it / Take-its for all of our customers to enjoy. We are focusing our efforts on building better programs that customers have told us they would like to see at Michaels. For example, we are working closely with our vendors to create more excitement outside of the classroom and share the joy of crafting with their products with more people. This is but one way that Michaels is working hard to make certain that we offer our customers the best products, creative outlets, and overall store experience they deserve.

I have spoken of my employment with Michaels Crafts on this site very little, if at all, since I felt that this would be leaning to the side of creating a conflict of interest, and I didn’t want to do anything that would seem unprofessional or unethical.  I have been an Event Coordinator and Class Instructor for the last 3+ years.  I took over the position when our store could not possibly get lower on the list of class sales for the district.  For the first 2 years, we saw such an increase in our program that actually put us on the top of the list for both years.  Last year, we finished 2nd.  This progress was not accomplished without taking the program and pouring my entire self into it and creating something that we could all be proud of.  This included myself teaching  at varying times: loom knitting, beading, scrapbooking, book altering/making, birthday parties, floral design, kids camp…the list goes on to include any number of craft workshops that would be fun for the community to participate in.  It also included seeking out talented and professional instructors, making connections in the community, and just being there for everyone who wanted to be a part and feel connected to something crafty.

I am trying very hard to take the news of the cancellation of all classes at Michaels, except Wilton Cake Decorating, with the attitude that the Michaels.com Editor spoke of it above, on their website message board.  I am trying to get over the pain in my gut that happens when I think of all the hard work, and encouragement given to all my wonderful teachers…just to have to tell them they are no longer needed.  Some of these instructors have been with me since the beginning.  Yes, I am glad to say, that Michaels did authorize my manager to offer all our instructors part time associate positions, if they are so inclined…and my manager is so sensitive to how all these people feel, that she encouraged them to do so…and I hope they will.

In all this…I hope that down the line…Michaels Corporate will begin to have an inkling about how valuable the class program really was.  You cannot sever such strong ties to the community without experiencing repercussions in some way that defines who you are as a whole.  This is written to help ease what I’m feeling inside, and to help me vocalize the hope that eventually, we will see the class  program reinstated…and not just something that has to be followed “by rote”, but that can highlight the amazing talents of artistic individuals  throughout every community in a special and unique way…

…after all, that is what true creativity is all about.

Respectfully,

Bethany~

**Calling All Pics!!!

What a BEAUTY!!!“Calling All Project Pictures!”

As a new year approaches, I thought it would be a lot of fun to open a new page on the site.  This would be a chance for all of you to shine!

I know that so many of you out there have purchased, or downloaded patterns from the many that have been offered here at the Loom Knitter’s Clique, as well as have attended my classes locally.  I would LOVE to see the finished items…and I know that everyone else would too!  I’m planning on opening a new page entitled…”Clique Pics”  (cute, huh?)  in which you wonderful loomers out there can feature your beautiful projects that have been offered here on the site.  It’s so encouraging  and inspiring to see what others have accomplished, and also to see how unique everyone’s projects turn out, even when using the same pattern.

To get the pictures to me, please send them in JPEG or GIF format, no larger than 600 pixels via email attachment to:

Bethany@GettinItPegged.com

Hurry!  I’d love to get the page up and going by the end of this week to begin the New Year with style!  Happy Looming…

Buckets, Bracelets, Mittens & more…

I hope you all have had a Fantabulous Christmas Holiday!!!

Ours was splenderific!  For some reason this year, it finally sank into my deepest being that I didn’t have to be totally stressed out…our new Christmas tradition must be doing the trick.  Yippee!!   :)

Here’s a little peek into what things we did, and gave over the holiday…

Christmas Bounty~

These were goodie buckets we made up to give to all of my extended family.  Keep your eye out right after St Patrick’s Day to get these buckets, usually priced at around $2 each, for 90% off!! Now that’s a great deal!  My girls and I made dipped pretzel rods wrapped in cellophane and ribbon to add to the regular chocolate, peppermints, and pistachios.  This picture was taken before I tucked a tangerine into each bucket just for good measure.

Bracelets for my mom & sisters~

I created these beautiful sparklies to add to each of my sisters’ & mom’s gift buckets.  They were a big hit!     :)

Emily Mitts~

I finally mastered cables on the loom!!!  This I’m very excited about, as I have tried and tried over the years I’ve been loom knitting and just couldn’t get the hang of knitting these babies without stretching those stitches too much.  Isela made knitting these beauties a snap!  The project above is made from the Jamie Mitts pattern in her new book, Learn to Knit Cables on Looms.  But the ones shown are now dubbed Emily’s Mitts!  She wears them most of the day, so she must think they’re the “bees knees”.

New Mittens for Me!

Of course, I couldn’t forget a little something for me!  These are wonderful mittens that I knit up based on Isela’s Itty Bitty Mitts pattern…just enlarged.  I love the way the thumb is done in one piece with the hand…no piecing after the fact!  Great idea!  :)

out with the old…

…and by the looks of my old mittens, it was high time for a new pair!   ;)

Happy Boxing Day!

Beading & Looms~ya gotta luv em!

Loom Beading

Isn’t it great what you can whip up with a few beads & a loom?

This was the result of a class I’m teaching at the college all about Holiday Gift Giving Ideas~this is a super fast, but elegant project that any one would be pleased to receive!

This one uses regular beading wire in black, on which beads are randomly threaded, then knitted into every loop of a 2 peg I-cord, a few at a time.

How easy is that?!

Add a lovely clasp and charm! The bracelet is finished as you would a regular jewelry project…with beading crimps, and, in this case, a pretty toggle clasp.

I dangled an old fashioned silver key charm, just for good measure.  :)

Wow! Great Detail! :)My favorite thing about beading with a knitting loom is how the beads are delicately encased by the swirly black wire…lovely!

*Also lovely….

the AMAZING closeups brought to you ala my new camera!  YES!!!  :D

Tastey Surprise #1~

  2. image stabilization
  3. 15 shots per second
  4. mineWhat a BEAUTY!!!

Santa came early this year!   I’ve been saving up my loomy $$ and finally have enough to get my perfect dream camera! Yippee!!!!!  Now, all those close ups will actually look good.  ;)

***Stay tuned for Tastey Secret Surprise #2…it’s a dooooooozy!!!!!!

December Jewelry Projects~

These are the two jewelry projects for my classes in December…

G.o.r.g.e.o.u.s!!!

3 Strand Ribbon & Beads~

Lovely Detail~This is a fun project using a new product out there that has a wire already threaded onto ribbon for ease of beading.

Very snappy idea!  :)

Fantasy Seed Bead Necklace~

This is a very elegant piece…one continuous strand of about a million tiny seed beads…ya, I do mean a million!!!  ;)

But, no worries!

This little number gets to make use of another wonderful product out there…

Spin N Bead Jr~Spin N Bead Jr!  This was my first time using this little gadget.  The top wooden bowl spins on it’s base.  You hold this hooked bead needle, threaded with your bead string, into the

bowl while you are spinning it and the beads thread themselves onto the needle!  Pretty neat, huh?…Well, the concept is cool, it just wasn’t as easy as that to work…but definitely easier than threading all those tiny beads on by hand!  My dequervain’s tendinitis emphatically thanks the Spin N Bead Jr!!

By the way…I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday, filled with lots of fun, family, and tastey goodness!  Mine was splenderific…and I have 2 items of wonderful news discovered over the last 48 hrs that I will share with you as soon as I can!  Secret surprises can can be super tastey too.  ;)

Pretties for My Pegs~

I’ve been working on a new Close up of Loomy Dangles~project and needed to have stitch markers for the design I’m knitting…I know it doesn’t look like much at the moment…it’s going to need a severe blocking to get it to show properly!  :) Loomy Dangles!

But if I was going to have to use markers, I needed to have something glitzy…so I made little loomy dangles.  At first, it took some getting use to…I kept having my hook get wrapped up in them, but now it’s no problem at all, and I really love the personal touch.  It says this Bethany’s loom…these are the things she likes: loom knitting and sparkly pretties!  (sorry about the blurry pics…I’m working on getting a new camera that takes much better close ups.)

  1. If you want stitch markers of your own…they’re very simple to create.  The components are latch style earring hooks (that way you can remove them easier if you need to), eye pins (the ones with a loop on one end), charms and a few pretty beads.

  2. You place the beads on the eye pins, in the order you’d like them to hang.

  3. Bend the wire in a 90 degree angle over the top bead, and trim wire to approx. 3/8″.

  4. Using round nose pliers, curl the wire, beginning at the very tip, toward the base of the head pin and top bead until you have a nicely formed loop, about the same size as the loop on the bottom.

  5. Attach your charm on the bottom, and the earring hook at the top.  Remember when opening the loops to attach other items, to always twist them open, rather than pulling, so the wire is not weakened.

Wah Lah!!!!!!!!!  Your very own Pretties for your Pegs!  Choose charms that tell a story about you!  This makes the idea more meaningful and worth while.

Beading in Blue & Black~

Here are the projects for the November classes at my LCS…

I must say…they are stunning.  I’d be happy to wear these anywhere!Rhapsody in Blue~*Midnight Magic*

This one is my favorite, but what a doozy to make…six strands of tiny beads!  Yikes!  But the results are definitely worth it, though…if you live at all near me, pop on in for a class!  :D
